Plastic Ring

Plastic ring

Shall I compare thee to a plastic ring?
Thou art less round, less malleable, and not nearly as see-through.
Rough winds do shake the rubber gloves of September,
And plastic’s lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too stained the glove of heaven appears,
And often is his rubbery complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed.
But thy eternal polymer chain shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that stretchiness thou ow’st;
Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,
So long as men can wear gloves or beer cans can be held together,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
