This afternoon’s offering is the celebrated Gatchina Palace Egg, crafted by Mikhail Evlampievich Perkhin under the supervision of legendary Russian jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé. It was commissioned by Nicholas II of Russia in 1901 as an Easter gift to his mother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna. Just under 5 inches high by around 4 inches wide, the egg, constructed from gold, enamel, silver-gilt, portrait diamonds, rock crystal and seed pearls, opens to reveal a surprise miniature gold replica of the palace at Gatchina, a village 30 miles southwest of St. Petersburg that was built for County Grigorii Orlov and was later acquired by Tsar Paul I.

The offering was left on the hallway carpet.
